PET or HDPE: where should your bottle project start?

Compare product visibility, bottle appearance and the questions that guide material selection.

Back to guides

Start with the contents and the filling process

Define what the bottle will contain, how it will be filled and how the product will be stored. Material selection depends on the complete application, not the resin name alone.

PET: a clear presentation route

PET is often considered when product visibility is important. Clear and amber formats provide different appearance options. Ask the supplier to review the chosen bottle and its suitability for your contents and filling conditions.

HDPE: an opaque presentation route

HDPE is widely used for opaque packaging. Color, wall distribution and bottle geometry affect the finished pack. Review samples rather than assuming two bottles of the same nominal capacity will perform identically.

Check the complete packaging system

Confirm neck dimensions, closure compatibility, liner, induction-sealing requirements, label area and transport packaging. Do not assume that virgin resin alone establishes food-contact suitability for every market.

Prepare a meaningful comparison

Send the same brief for each material: contents, target capacity, neck preference, fill temperature, decoration, target market and order quantity. Compare the complete bottle-and-closure proposal.
